FIFTEEN

MILLS

WHEN WE REACHED THE OFFICE, we found Oleh standing outside with his phone in his hand, pacing anxiously back forth. He stopped when he saw us and took a look at my face. Whatever he saw there had him sinking down to the ground, head in his hands. We walked over, and I bent down beside him to rest an arm around his shoulders.

“Not Pete,” he was murmuring, hands gripping his hair tightly. “Not Pete.”

“We’re sorry, Oleh,” I said.

“I should have stayed on the phone with him,” Oleh groaned. “He shouldn’t have gone on the stupid tour.”

He stayed hunched on the ground for a bit, and when he finally lifted his head, his eyes were bloodshot, tears on his cheeks. “What happened?”

“It looks like he was attacked in the same way as Yara,” I told him solemnly. “He was on a street not far from where she was found.”

Oleh frowned at that. “What was he doing there? We agreed we wouldn’t go anywhere near there. His tour was almost all on the other side of the city!”

“We saw the map he had,” Fry told him. “We know he wasn’t supposed to be in the area, but he was.”

“Why?” Oleh asked.

“We’re not sure, but we think he might have gone to see why Yara went there.”

Oleh shook his head. “Those kids.” He slowly rose up to his feet, and I followed, my knees a bit sore from holding the crouch for so long. “Come in.” He turned and walked into the office, and we joined him.

“What the hell is going on out there?” Oleh muttered as he grabbed a key and opened one of the lockers. “Something’s not right, Inspector.”

“We know,” I agreed. “Do you have any idea why Yara would have gone there in the first place? Why Pete would have gone?”

Oleh raked a hand through his hair. “Yara, I suppose, if she’d heard about a sighting or something, might have gone. But Pete.” He shrugged. “Pete didn’t believe in any of this, you know. I don’t know why he would have gone out there. I don’t know anything.”

“Lois Callan seems to think that there’s something off about the place, too,” Fry told him.

He looked over at us. “Lois does?”

“She’s the one who found Pete.”

He swore. “Christ. I should give her a call. Pete’s parents too.” He looked around, flustered and overwhelmed, and then sat down, head in his hands.

I looked over at the locker he’d opened. “Is this Pete’s?” I asked, pointing to it.

Without looking up, Oleh hummed in confirmation, and I walked over to the locker and peered inside. It was messier than Yara’s had been. Pete had stuffed his clothes inside with a pair of trainers and a rucksack. I pulled the bag out first, surprised to find it as heavy as it was, and looked inside. Pete’s laptop was there, along with several sturdy textbooks. He was a student, of course. There was an empty Thermos and water bottle, along with a half-empty packet of chewing gum, the wrappers to a few chocolate bars, and a set of headphones.
